 Introduction and Application

A laser pointer or laser pen is a portable and visible laser. It is designed to highlight something of interest by projecting a small bright spot of colored light onto it. The small width of the beam and low power of typical laser pointers make the beam itself invisible in a reasonably clean atmosphere, showing a point of light when striking an opaque surface. Some higher-powered laser pointers project a visible beam via scattering from dust particles or water/fog droplets along the beam path. Higher power and higher frequency lasers may have a visible beam even in clean air due to Rayleigh scattering from air molecules, especially when viewed in moderately-to-dimly lit conditions. The intensity of such scattering increases when these beams are viewed from angles near the beam axis. Such pointers, particularly in the green-light output range, are used as astronomical-object pointers for teaching purposes, in the same general manner as flashlights.

The laser can be bright enough when you light it in normal temperature, so you had better not light it continually over 30 seconds

Laser pointers are good tools only when used properly. When using laser pointers, the below must be observed:

• Never view a laser beam using an optical instrument, such as binoculars or microscopes
• Children are not allowed to use laser pointers unless under the supervision of an adult

• Labeled with FDA certification stating "DANGER: Laser Radiation" for Class 3R lasers or "CAUTION: Laser Radiation" for Class 2 pointers
• Classified as Class 2 or 3R according to the label. Do not use Class 3b or 4 products
• Operate at a wavelength between 630 nm and 680 nm
• Have a maximum output less than 5 mW, the lower the safer
